One person has died and his brother is injured after a US Coast Guard vessel collided with a fishing boat off Puerto Rico on Monday, authorities said.

The 154-foot-long Winslow Griesser and the Desakata, a 23-foot fishing vessel, collided around 2:20 p.m. Monday about four nautical miles (about 4.6 miles) north of Dorado, Puerto Rico, the Coast Guard explained.

Two brothers, identified as Carlos Rosario and Samuel Rosario Beltrán, were aboard the Desakata and were rescued by crew aboard the Winslow Griesser, a San Juan-based rapid response vessel.

Carlos died of his injuries, according to the Coast Guard, while Samuel survived the crash but sustained injuries.

Samuel was transferred to the San Juan Medical Center hospital for treatment.

Carlos' remains will be transferred to the city's Institute of Forensic Sciences, the Coast Guard said.

“We sincerely regret the death of Carlos Rosario following the collision between a Coast Guard vessel and the Desakata fishing vessel this afternoon,” said Capt. José E. Díaz, commander of the Coast Guard Sector San Juan.

"We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones, and pray that they find strength during this very difficult time," Diaz said.

The causes of the accident were not disclosed.

Diaz confirmed that a thorough investigation will be carried out "to determine the causal factors" and "so that we can prevent this type of incident from occurring in the future."

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into what caused the maritime collision.
