Former US President Donald Trump said tonight (Tuesday) that FBI agents raided his mansion in Mar-a-Lago in Florida and broke into his safe.

The raid was apparently related to the US Department of Justice's investigation into his transfer of official presidential records to his resort in the country.

According to Trump, his estate "is under siege", however he did not address the reason for the raid.

"After working and cooperating with the relevant government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate," Trump said, adding "They even broke into my safe!".

The US Department of Justice, the FBI's headquarters in Washington and its field office in Miami declined to comment on the raid.

Last February, the National Archives of the United States, which records official presidential documents, confirmed that it had found classified information among the material that former President Donald Trump took with him to his Florida home when he left office last year.

The National Archives and Records Administration said that "items marked as classified national security information were identified inside the boxes."

This, after weeks before that, information was published about Trump's handling of official documents, and the National Archives confirmed that they had returned 15 boxes of documents from his estate in Florida, which he took after leaving the White House more than a year ago.

Among the confiscated documents were official correspondence between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the letter left by his predecessor Barack Obama to him during the change of power between them.

In the letter, written by David S.

Ferreiro, the National Archivist, was told that the information in those boxes included "classified information of national security".

According to the Presidential Records Act, Trump was required to turn over all documents and records relating to official presidential business to the Archives upon the end of his term.
