The National Union of Syrian Students, in partnership with the Ministry of Local Administration and Environment, launched today the second phase of the youth initiative “First Neighbor” with the aim of raising the level of popular awareness in the local administration elections and involving young people in them and in local councils through candidacy and giving them an active role in society, as they constitute a primary goal on the side political and service.

The second phase of the initiative includes conducting dialogue sessions at the level of neighborhoods and municipalities adjacent to universities and institutes in various governorates, through which the Union’s volunteers work to educate the residents and students of these neighborhoods about the structure and organization of the local administration in Syria, empowering youth candidates for municipal elections from the residents of these areas, and encouraging the people To participate in the elections and carry out some useful post-election activities.

SANA accompanied the launch of the second phase of the initiative in the neighborhoods and municipalities, where Imad Al-Omar, member of the Executive Office of the National Union of Syrian Students and Head of the Office of Studies and Student Issues, indicated that after the completion of the first phase of the initiative at the university level, it moved to the second phase, which targets about 50 neighborhoods and municipalities adjacent to universities. and institutes in the various governorates to encourage the people to elect their representatives and to expand the participation of young people in the elections, given that the local administrations are concerned with the details of our daily lives, and the youth should not be satisfied with mere criticism, but rather exercise their role in the election process, because when the citizen is elected, he has a practical right to the subject of criticism, follow-up, accountability and evaluation.

During the dialogue session held at the Commercial Institute in the Qudsaya suburb of Damascus countryside, lawyer Hussein Al-Mohammed gave a presentation on the local administration law, who is entitled to vote, who is entitled to nominate, the role assigned to people who reach local councils, the role of the citizen through exercising control over these councils, activating the culture of complaint and the need to contribute Massively in these elections in order to deliver qualified people to these councils, which will reflect positively on the citizen and his family.

Engineer Ola Abdullah Maysara Hawar pointed out that the initiative aims to educate young people and activate their role and participation in public affairs, indicating that the initiative works in two phases before and after the elections on four main programs (promotion, awareness, empowerment and activation) with the aim of activating participation in all stages of the upcoming elections and improving communication with those in charge. On service work in municipalities.

For her part, Engineer Warda Muzahem, who specializes in computers and automation, pointed out the importance of the sessions in raising awareness of people and creating a societal culture about Local Administration Law No. 107 of 2011, in addition to transferring ideas put forward by young people into implementation and implementation on the ground, noting that she will run for the upcoming elections for the youth category. to achieve this goal.

Both students, Loujain Zaarour and Bayram Mawazini from Yarmouk Private University, confirmed that they participate in the dialogue sessions in order to reach real and effective representatives in the local councils and work with them hand in hand to rebuild the country, noting that the young generation is capable of doing a lot in this field.

On the second of August, the National Union of Syrian Students, in partnership with the Ministry of Local Administration and Environment, launched the “First Neighbor” initiative at the level of public and private universities as a first stage, followed by subsequent stages to spread awareness of the issue of local council elections.
