Val-de-Marne: cyanobacteria alert, Lake Créteil under surveillance

2022-08-09T11:31:58.335Z

With the hot weather, green blooms have appeared in recent days in some places in this body of water prohibited from swimming.

No worries, but heightened vigilance.

Lake Créteil (Val-de-Marne) has been under special surveillance for a few days.

Tablecloths of an unusual blue-green have indeed been spotted on this body of water appreciated by walkers, runners and fishermen.

These are cyanobacteria, algae that developed explosively at the end of July.

As indicated by the signs placed this weekend all around the lake, these micro-organisms "need few elements to grow: water, carbon dioxide (CO2), nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), light and high temperature .

Everything is gathered here.

Lac de Créteil, Tuesday August 9, 2022. Explanatory panels have been placed around the body of water.

Swimming here is prohibited throughout the year.

"Certain species of cyanobacteria are capable of producing toxins which can cause health problems in humans and certain animals, depending on the concentrations and the conditions of exposure", it is indicated to passers-by.

The list of these disorders is long: vomiting, nausea, muscle pain, dermatological problems, headaches... Nothing engaging in short.

If all regulars of the place are supposed to know that swimming is prohibited here, the new signs remind us.

Avoiding direct contact with these greenish waters, taking a "neat" shower in the event of accidental immersion, not consuming fish caught in the body of water, but also not letting your dog drink or bathe are all good practices highlighted in a few lines.

Créteil, Tuesday August 9, 2022. The shores of Lake Créteil remain a pleasant place in this sweltering summer.

No paddle at the moment, but ok for kayaking

"You will never see me go splashing around in this lake," says Bernard, 68, a regular here.

And so is my dog.

He is always kept on a leash.

This is not the case for all canids.

“I have already seen dogs without a leash jump into the water to go and attack the birds,” laments Michel Noël, member of the Lac de Créteil collective.

The appearance of these algae, quite natural in a body of water in this sweltering summer, does not particularly worry Pauline Butel-Gomis, the director of the Leisure Island, which offers many activities, in particular nautical.

"We are here at a first level out of four in terms of the risks associated with these cyanobacteria, we are monitoring all of this closely," she explains.

As a "precautionary measure", the paddle activity is no longer offered for the moment.

Kayaks and catamarans, on the other hand, can always go into the water.

And for swimming, just open the door of the Ile de Loisirs wave pool.

“Users are very satisfied with it,” emphasizes Pauline Butel-Gomis.
