War in Ukraine: the grain agreement is not a panacea

A dozen ships loaded with grain have left ports in the Odessa region since August 1.

Thanks to the agreement signed under the aegis of the UN in Istanbul on July 22 by Ukraine, Russia and Turkey, grain deliveries interrupted since the start of the war have resumed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed

"a chance to reduce the severity of the food crisis caused by Russia".

The World Food Program estimates that an additional 47 million people have been at risk of

“acute hunger”

since February 24.

But for the moment, the agreement does not benefit the most fragile states most dependent on grain imports.
