A 4-year-old boy was struck by a car early Monday in Indiana after walking off a highway while his parents were asleep, authorities said.
The boy was struck around 4 a.m. on State Highway 66 in Warrick County, according to the sheriff's office.

The boy, identified as Braxton Freeze, a native of the small town of Princeton, was sleeping with his mother and a brother at the business where his mother's boyfriend works, Warrick County Sheriff Mike Wilder said, according to the report. Evansville Courier & Press newspaper.

Without anyone noticing, he left and ended up in the middle of the road, he said.
When the mother woke up, her son had already left the place and she could not find him.
The driver of the vehicle called the 911 emergency number to report that he had run over a child and stayed at the scene until the authorities arrived.

The man attempted to perform CPR on the boy while receiving instructions over the phone, according to local station WFIE, an NBC affiliate in Evansville, but died at the scene of the accident.
"The family of that child, the driver, having to deal with it, the first responders on the scene and those who took the call this morning... [What happened] affects, impacts everyone that this incident touches," he said. Deputy Police Chief Paul Kruse.
Authorities do not currently suspect that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the deadly collision, the sheriff's office said.
