A stream of demands: the electric vehicle revolution is on the way - how are we prepared? | Israel today

2022-08-10T21:02:43.406Z

Don't say the day will come: according to the expectations of the electric company, "in 2035 one hundred percent of the cars will be electric - an increase of up to 10% in energy consumption" • How to prepare: "Transmission lines and power plants and substations"

"In 2035, one hundred percent of the cars will be electric. We predict that as a result there will be a 10-7.5% increase in energy consumption, which is a significant figure," Moshe Cohen, director of the Jerusalem and Negev network division and holder of an electric vehicle portfolio at the company, told "Israel Today" the electricity

It should be noted that more and more Israelis are joining the electric vehicle revolution.

However, Cohen says that "there is no noticeable increase because it is still new and small. We are preparing for what will come. The electricity grid is able to accept one or another increase, because it is not on the scales and has reserves. In the meantime, we are living fine, because we are talking about 12,000-10,000 electric cars in Israel.

"This number is in line with expectations - 5% penetration was expected in the first year, and it stands at 7.5% penetration. That is, 7.5% of all new vehicles are electric. We at the Electric Company are preparing for this, and have built scenarios for a moderate and linear increase. We are verifying the approach that in the years The first will be the higher penetration and after that there will be moderation."

"Exploring peak demand"

Cohen adds and says that "we are an essential service provider, and we are not only interested in the increase in consumption. We are looking at peaks in demand, because we need the networks to meet the peaks in demand. Here, too, it is a bit more complex. There is a peak in national demand, within the framework of which I have to organize in terms of power plants, lines transmission and substations, but there are also seasonal demand peaks. For example, what happens if everyone comes back at 7pm from work and wants to charge the electric vehicle? We have to do it from the level of the building to the power stations. The whole chain is tested by us with working assumptions and forecasts ".

What about the number of charging stations offered today in Israel?

"There are now a few thousand individual charging stations. I don't think there are more than 1,500-1,000 stations. The problem starts when you don't have private parking inside a complex, when the tenants park on the street and you can't install a station there. This is because the only party that can install a station in the public space is the authority The local. When it comes to a private house, it's the simplest. Some people live in a building that has marked private parking lots, and then there's the option of organizing and making a central charging point and bringing company.

"Those who don't have parking are in trouble. These are the people who will enter this area the latest, or they throw a cable on the sidewalk, which is a terrible threat. There are companies or local authorities such as the Jerusalem Municipality that installed about 20 stations in the city."
