The police arrested an incumbent mayor this morning (Wednesday) on suspicion of serious bribery offenses.
The CEO of the municipality and two other businessmen were also arrested.
As part of the police's fight against crimes of moral purity and public corruption, the investigators of the National Fraud Investigation Unit (NAU) in Blade 433 arrested the four, who are allegedly involved in the commission of crimes of bribery, fraud and breach of trust, false registration in corporate documents, money laundering and crimes according to an order Income tax and value added tax law.
The police investigation began following a suspicion that during the local government elections held in 2018, two interested businessmen transferred funds, in the amount of hundreds of thousands of shekels, to the election campaign of the candidate for mayor at the time and in return, promised them that he would work to advance their economic affairs, after he was elected.
The investigation is being conducted in cooperation with the Diamond Unit of the Tax Authority and is accompanied by the Economic Department of the State Attorney's Office.
In accordance with the developments and for the needs of the investigation, the suspects will be brought during the day for a discussion on the extension of their detention at the Peace Court in Israel.
The police commented on the arrests, saying that they will continue to act wherever there is a suspicion of public corruption, which harms the order of government, and that an investigation will be conducted with the aim of uncovering improper processes, reaching the truth and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
