Tu Bab is known to all of us as the Jewish holiday of love, when the daughters of Israel go out to frolic in the vineyards. It calls us to white dresses, gifts, and couple spending time, but the origin of the holiday stems from a severe crisis of the people of Israel, in a story of rebuke that many are not aware of, or associate it with celebrations.

It all starts with the "Mistress in the Hill" case.

In Pesht, a Levite stumbles with his mistress to Giva, a city of the tribe of Benjamin, and stays there.

During the night, the sons of Baliel arrive at the hostel and demand that Levi's man come out, but he takes out his mistress instead and she is brutally raped to death.

As a result of the incident, a Levite dismembers her body and sends a piece to each of the tribes of Israel.

The story causes a shock in their hearts, which leads to a conflict between the 11 tribes of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin - a war of brothers.

Among other things, the tribes swear that there will be no marriage relations with the Benjaminites.

According to tradition, on the 15th of Av, which is Valentine's Day, the conflict between the tribes ended and it was allowed to marry the Benjaminites. However, the 11 tribes were still bound by the oath and had to find a way to "circumvent" it, thus the idea was born that the daughters of the tribes would commit adultery In the vineyards and Beni Binyamin will be able to get to know them.

In the Mishnah it is written: "There were no good days for Israel like the fifteenth of Av and the Day of Atonement."

Admittedly, Tu Bab has become a holiday where souls get to know each other, a holiday that symbolizes marital unity, but Tu Bab is beyond that - it symbolizes love within the nation of Israel.
