Theater fans can look forward to the coming summer, because the Treibhaus Theater is once again bringing a festival to the stage.

"1493 - Schongau between blood and friendship" is both a history game in the late Middle Ages and a completed crime story - with many corpses.

Schongau

– Michael Boos and Maximilian Geiger, the two chairmen of the Treibhaus theater association in Schongau, don't really want to reveal too much about the content of the new festival just yet, but of course the preparations for the performances in a year's time have been underway for a long time.

Geiger, not only a theater performer with body and soul, but also a studied historian, has been carrying the idea for "1493" around with him for eight years, long before it was even clear that the Treibhaus association would ever stage the two hangman's daughter festivals, eh he tells.

Directing a play you have written yourself

Originally he wanted to turn the material into a novel, but initially he stuck with the idea, besides his studies and the theater - Geiger is author, director and actor in one person - there was hardly any time left.

In 2019, during the performances of the second hangman's daughter, it became clear to him that he absolutely wanted to direct his own historical play, which he had written himself.

"After all, there are still so many exciting stories in Schongau's past that want to be told." His old idea "1493" resulted in a newly conceived story, but this time for the stage.

And in the first lockdown, the raw version was created.

Around 200 years before the executioner's daughter

The play is set in the late Middle Ages, and according to Geiger, it combines what would have made the hangman's stoker performances so successful: a crime thriller with a self-contained plot set in Schongau.

"For a first independent piece, I found that important in order to have a recognition value and to be on the safe side when it comes to the interest of the audience," says Geiger.

This is "a kind of link between the old and the new, so that we can try things out and see whether a big festival works without the hangman's daughter's call".

On the other hand, he wanted to move away from the two previous Treibhaus Festivals towards something independent, with its own characters, its own plot and a different time in Schongau, for which one could use the fundus again without having to buy all the costumes from scratch.

The new play takes place about 200 years earlier.

Corona came at the right time

The rough draft has meanwhile become a finished text book.

The subtitle for "1493 - Schongau between blood and friendship" comes from Michael Boos, as Geiger reveals.

"We had a first reading with the old hangman's daughter actors and that was his idea."

It was clear that Schongau had to appear in the title so that the viewers could identify with it.

"The history is very diverse, the history of the city of Schongau simply gives a lot," explains Boos.

"I think it's great to show another time and another story." Corona actually played into their hands, they had a lot of breathing space, "that was important for the development of the play".

Manfred Wodarczyk and Schongauer Sommer on board

Someone else read the libretto: Manfred Wodarczyk.

And so this time the already tried and tested cooperation between Theater Treibhaus and the Schongauer Sommer will take place again, "that was great with the last two plays and will be the same again," Boos is sure.

The performances are planned for August 2023, which is doubly fitting for the Treibhaus theater, because the tenth anniversary of the founding is being celebrated at the same time.

The trio estimates that there could be almost 80 actors, 40 musicians and a choir again, around 140 people in total.

After the summer you want to think about the distribution of roles, the actors should be able to plan, says Boos.

The rehearsals will then start in January or February 2023.

Planned again with own music

For Manfred Wodarczyk it will soon be a matter of arranging all dates with the city, obtaining offers for the grandstand, making suggestions for the stage and stage design, signing contracts with clubs and working out the calculation.

"We are already thinking about pre-selling the tickets."

You would also like to take care of the stage music yourself.

"We would like it to be exclusive, but we have to see if we can get everyone here," says Boos.

The year 2019 is fondly remembered: the music was specially composed for the hangman's daughter.

The team with Carolin Nuscheler, Linus Mödl and Hansi Daxer with choir and orchestra received a lot of applause.

This is what the play “1493” is about:

Schongau Anno Domini 1493: The body of an influential patrician is found within the city walls - everything points to murder.

The captain of the city guard is entrusted with solving the case.

But time is of the essence, because while he's still investigating, the killer strikes again.

A relentless race against time begins, as the killer won't stop until he's secured a decades-old secret.

And the captain knows that the past could catch up with him too.

He has to find the culprit before he falls victim to him too.

Club would like more support

The performance is to take place again on Mayor-Schaegger-Platz, "even if that's no longer my beloved place," says Manfred Wodarczyk, head of Schongauer Sommer.

The space was specially prepared for this, but the infrastructure simply does not exist.

There is a lack of many things - from suitable premises, toilets and noise protection to parking spaces.

"There are tensions," emphasizes Wodarczyk, again and again for years, this time too.

The Treibhaus association sees it the same way, cultural sponsorship does not take place in Schongau: "In 2016 I still thought I would do it for the city, now I only do it for the people and the association," explains Michael Boos, chairman of the Theater Greenhouse.

"The city doesn't see it as a diamond in the rough."

He tried to start a conversation, but nothing came up.

With a total budget of around 130,000 euros, the city contributed 15,000 euros for the hangman's daughter and then deducted the building yard service.

Boos: "You don't see how many small heads have to bear a huge responsibility."

But you will certainly not let that stop you and want to look positively into the future.

Boos: “We do it for the community, for us.

It's just crazy when 5,000 to 6,000 spectators come and you can inspire them." Maximilian Geiger, director and author, sums it up in one sentence: "Playing theater is enough for us."
