Time out between school and work: Josef Weiser decided to do a voluntary social year at the youth and social work association.

Geretsried – You could also call it an orientation year, the voluntary social year (FSJ).

Josef Weiser decided to join the youth and social work association (TVJA) after graduating from high school.

The 19-year-old will primarily be found at the Karl Lederer elementary school.

For him the best location ever.

"I went to school there," says Weiser, who is considering becoming a teacher himself.

After the FSJ, the career decision will certainly be easier for him.

The TVJA usually presents its volunteers, whom it has employed since 2011, in October.

By then they have already completed the first four weeks and settled in.

This year, Managing Director Rudi Mühlhans brought the date forward.

"We are still urgently looking for applicants," he said in a press conference.

Two positions are still vacant – locations are the Isardamm elementary school and the secondary school in Geretsried.

The FSJers support the teachers, be it in class, during breaks or with projects.

The Kreisjugendring (KJR) Miesbach acts as a new partner for the TVJA in supporting the volunteers.

According to Mühlhans, he replaces the Munich Evangelical Youth.

The Miesbach District Youth Council is a new partner

"We are active in the districts of Miesbach, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Rosenheim," reported Christina Spohr from the KJR.

Around 50 placements in daycare centers, schools, after-school clubs, sports clubs and youth centers are offered.

The volunteers who work there full-time are between 16 and 26 years old.

The voluntary service is remunerated with 450 euros per month.

The FSJ program also includes 25 seminar days.

Youth leader training is included.

It's all about personal development

Currently there are between 25 and 30 young people who are looked after by the Miesbach District Youth Council; according to Spohr, they are around 18 years old on average.

"They are actually getting younger and have to grow into their role," said the KJR employee.

It is mainly secondary school students and high school students who decide to do an FSJ.

But graduates from middle and special schools are also welcome.

We would wish for a lot more of that.

The expert emphasized the many advantages of an FSJ.

It is a break between school and work, and the main thing is personal development.

“It offers a lot of opportunities to try things out and to find out who you are.” This also includes daring to say no when you are unsure about a task.

Josef Weiser is looking forward to his assignment at the Karl Lederer Elementary School.

The 19-year-old will also have a contact there.

"It will definitely be a great year," says the Geretsrieder happily.

Incidentally, he is the 28th FSJer employed by the sponsoring association.
