Russia fires on multiple Ukrainian cities, from the north to the south

Heavy missile and artillery fire hit several regions of Ukraine overnight, from Zaporizhia in the south to Kharkiv in the north.

On the southern front, Ukrainian air defenses shot down two missiles near Zaporizhia, according to the regional military administration, and four more strikes south of the city were reported early Wednesday.

The city of Mykolaiv came under rocket fire again on Tuesday night, injuring three civilians.

"Fighting continues in the border settlements of the Mykolaiv region and the Dnipropetrovsk region. In most communities, the situation remains tense, with more and more villages on the brink of destruction," the regional administration stated.

Authorities in Kharkiv, in northeastern Ukraine, reported attacks in several districts, destroying property but without civilian casualties.

On the main battlefield in the Donetsk region, the Ukrainian military said several efforts by Russian troops to advance had been resisted.

However, artillery fire persisted along much of the front line, with Avdiivka, Soledar, Bakhmut and Siversk among the settlements hit by rocket, tank and artillery fire, the army said.

Two civilians were reported killed in Donetsk.

The Ukrainian military also reported new attacks on Russian positions in the Kherson region, saying "an enemy warehouse was destroyed in the Henichesk district of the Kherson region" on Tuesday.

Henichesk is close to Crimea.

CNN reported the attack on Tuesday.

The towns of Myrivska and Marhanets in the Nikopol district were hit by 80 missiles that fell on residential areas late Tuesday night, Valentyn Reznichenko wrote in a Telegram post on Wednesday.

More than 20 high-rise buildings, a cultural center, two schools, the city hall building and several other administrative buildings were hit, Reznichenko said.

Several thousand people are without electricity in Marhanets, while up to a thousand people in Myrivska are without gas, according to Reznichenko.

"It was a tragic night," she wrote in the post.

Some background

: Kyiv accused Russian forces of stockpiling heavy weapons and launching attacks from the Zaporizhia nuclear plant, which they seized in early March.

Moscow, for its part, claimed that Ukrainian troops are targeting the complex.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the recent artillery and rocket fire in the area as "suicidal," raising fears of an accident at the plant, the largest of its kind in Europe.

The war against Ukraine "must end with Crimea", says Zelensky

By Arnaud Siad

Ukraine must free the annexation of Crimea to end its war with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday.

"This Russian war against Ukraine and against the whole of free Europe began with Crimea and must end with Crimea - its liberation," Zelensky said in his late-night speech.

"Today it is impossible to say when this will happen. But we are constantly adding the necessary components to the formula for the liberation of Crimea."

"...Crimea is Ukrainian and we will never leave it."

The Russian occupation of Crimea threatens world security, he added.

"The presence of the Russian occupiers in Crimea is a threat to the whole of Europe and to world stability. (...) There will be no stable and lasting peace in many countries on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea as long as Russia can use our peninsula as its base military," Zelensky said.

The President of Ukraine went on to recall the historical importance of the peninsula for Ukrainians, saying: "Our state is home to peoples whose cultures and national aspirations were formed in Crimea. Therefore, when we work for the liberation of the peninsula, we are fighting for the restoration of the territorial integrity of our state, and for the return of home to the indigenous peoples of Ukraine".

This Tuesday a series of explosions were recorded in the area of a Russian air base in Crimea.

The Ukrainian side has not reported any attacks in the area.

Ukraine is not known to have attacked Crimean territory since the Russian invasion began.

Russia invaded and subsequently annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

By Mayumi Maruyama, Josh Pennington

The United States believes Russian officials have begun drone training in Iran, the latest sign that Moscow plans to buy the systems for its war in Ukraine.

"Over the past few weeks, Russian officials have conducted training in Iran as part of the deal for the transfer of unmanned aerial vehicles from Iran to Russia," a US official told CNN.

The official said that the intelligence about the training has recently been declassified.

CNN has contacted the Russian embassy in Washington for comment.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last month that Russia had "no comment on this" when asked by journalists about the drones.

CNN first reported last month that a Russian delegation had visited an airfield in central Iran at least twice since June to examine weapons-capable drones, according to national security adviser Jake Sullivan and exclusively obtained satellite imagery. by CNN.
