Several lakes in Bavaria are closed to bathers because of blue-green algae.

Even in a river, there is now an urgent warning against bathing.

Bamberg/Regensburg – In Upper Franconia, two other lakes have been closed to bathers because of blue-green algae.

The Ortswiesensee near Lichtenfels and the Badesee Breitengüßbach north of Bamberg are affected.

This was announced by the responsible district offices on Friday (5 August).

The Regensburg water management office has also informed the district office that a significant increase in blue-green algae has been detected in parts of the Naab.

According to the announcement on Friday, the section from Kallmünz to Etterzhausen is affected.

An increase is also to be expected for the lower sections up to the mouth.

"Blue-green algae can cause skin irritation, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea," says the press release from the Regensburg district.

The health department for the city and district therefore strongly advises against bathing in these sections of the Naab.

blue-green algae

Blue-green algae are not uncommon in the summer heat.

They can cause vomiting, especially in children and pets, if the water is drunk.

They are formed at high temperatures and high nutrient levels in the water, for example when artificial fertilizers from agriculture or faeces from sewage treatment plants are flushed in.

Swim a lap in the bathing lake – fantastic.
