Do you like snacking?

Do you often feel like a sweet treat in the afternoon?

Then simply make your healthy vitamin crispy snack yourself!

Especially highly aromatic, fully ripe fruit or vegetables from your own garden are ideal for drying.

Instead of using a lot of energy and spending hours in the oven, simply use the practical dehydrator.

Amazon price: 96.99 euros instead of 124.99 euros

Dehydration brings these advantages:

  • Low temperatures between 35 and 70 °C dry particularly gently.

  • Dried foods can be kept for a very long time (approx. 1 year) if stored properly.

  • There are more vitamins and minerals in 100 g of dried fruit than in 100 g of fresh fruit.

  • Herbs or edible flowers can also be preserved in this way while preserving their aroma and colour.

Salt preserves, this has been known all over the world since ancient times: in Morocco, lemons are preserved with salt, in Scandinavia, herring.

Take advantage of this property and make hard-leaved herbs such as thyme, sage or rosemary long-lasting.

Simply layer or chop the herb leaves and salt alternately in glasses and mix with salt - done.

Particularly noble: natural, original crystal salt with minerals and trace elements such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, selenium and manganese.

Preserving in a pot: Grandma's classic

This option is a classic.

Even our grandmothers preserved apple or pear compote in the preserving pot in this way.

To date, there is hardly a faster and less complicated way, especially if you buy a preserving machine.

All you need additionally are Weck jars or jars with screw caps, adhesive labels and a little patience.

Preserving in the oven: For large quantities

This variant is particularly worthwhile for larger quantities or many jars.

The principle is simple: the fully filled and sealed jars are placed in a dripping pan on the bottom shelf of the oven.

Fill this approx. 3 cm high with water and heat the oven to 180 degrees (top and bottom heat).

When the water starts to boil in the drip pan, switch off the oven and let the jars cook in the oven for about 45 minutes.

Then let the glasses cool on a kitchen rack.

Caution hot!

The set is perfectly equipped for preserving.

Please be careful when cooking in the oven: the hot steam escapes when you open the oven door and the preserving jars keep their temperature for a long time.

Because towels or potholders are a slippery matter when removing them, it is better to protect your fingers with a professional jar lifter from the practical preserving set.

Preserving: 4 golden rules

  • Hygiene is the be-all and end-all to ensure that your garden treasures last a long time.

The easiest way to sterilize mason jars, lids and rubber rings is in boiling water.

  • Wash fruit and vegetables thoroughly and cut off damaged areas or brown spots.

  • Fill in neatly without staining the rim.

It is best to use a measuring cup or funnel.

  • Fill the glasses to the brim and turn them upside down while they are still hot.

This ensures that no air gets inside.

Pickling for more flavor and creativity

When pickling, it is worth using high-quality olive oil.

Preserving fruit and vegetables keeps them for a very long time, but there are some limits to creativity.

If you like to experiment with herbs and spices and want more bite, pickling in oil, salt water or vinegar is a fine alternative.

Especially if you choose quality olive oil.

Absolute hygiene is important here, because the jars are not heated, in contrast to preserving.

Filling and sealing are therefore mandatory, the jars must be sterilized beforehand.

Amazon price: 15.90 euros instead of 17.95 euros

Is it still good or can it go away?

To ensure that the contents of the jar are still intact, the following applies: the lid should "pop" slightly when you open it for the first time.

This shows that the vacuum still exists and the contents were sealed airtight.

Cooking: how does it actually work?

The principle is as simple as it is ingenious.

Fruit or vegetables are heated to temperatures between 80 and 100 degrees - either directly in tightly closing jars or, like jam, as a fruit purée with preserving sugar in a large pot.

Because air and water vapor expand in the glass, overpressure is created.

When the contents of the glass cool down, air and water vapor contract again.

This creates a vacuum that sucks the lid down and seals it airtight.
