Researchers have found that rainwater is unsafe to drink worldwide because it contains what are known as "eternal chemicals".
The study, conducted by the universities of “Stockholm” and “ITH Zurich”, indicated that rainwater everywhere on the planet is not safe to drink due to levels of toxic chemicals known as “PFAS”, stressing that it is difficult to have a part of the world unaffected. Pollution and that chemicals have been found even in Antarctica and the Tibetan plateau.
These substances are known as “eternal chemicals” because they decompose very slowly. These substances were initially found in shampoo and makeup packages, but they spread throughout our environment, including in water and air.
Ian Cousins, a professor at Stockholm University and lead author of the study, which was published in the Journal of Environmental Science and Technology, said: "There is no place on Earth where rain is safe to drink, according to our measurements."
He added: The data that the research team studied since 2010 showed that even in Antarctica or the Tibetan plateau, rainwater levels are higher than the drinking water guidelines proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
According to the study, BFAs are now so persistent and ubiquitous that they will never disappear from our planet, indicating that we have made the planet inhospitable to human life by irreversibly polluting it so that nothing is clean enough to be safe.
