The holiday season always means an additional burden for animal shelters.

But it hasn't been as bad as this year for a long time.

There is a risk of collapse.

Nuremberg - The holiday season has begun, the holiday is booked, but what to do with the pet?

Even before Corona, the answer was often animal shelters.

However, the pandemic has exacerbated the situation.

Added to this are the increased costs due to the consequences of the Ukraine war.

Illegal puppy traders and animal placement organizations from abroad also do not make it easy for animal shelters in Bavaria.

The forecast for autumn and winter is bleak.

Animal shelters in Bavaria are bursting at the seams

The German Animal Welfare Association sounds the alarm.

Animal shelters across the nation are currently struggling with overcrowding.

No new animals can be accepted in Nuremberg.

Around 60 dogs, twice as many cats and even more small animals call the Nuremberg animal shelter their home at the moment.

"We're full to the roof," says manager Tanja Schnabel.

In addition, just such a roof over your head and food is not enough.

"The many animals in care bring the staff to their limits," says President Thomas Schröder of the German Animal Welfare Association.

Mainly because many of the dogs are difficult to handle and need a lot of care.

The corona pandemic was a fire accelerator.

Many people got a pet in times of lockdown and working from home - mostly young animals or puppies.

Now, with the start of the summer holidays and the travel season, the animals are often a nuisance and deported to animal shelters.

This is also confirmed by the German Animal Welfare Association.

Dog Romeo is now waiting for a new home at the animal shelter in Nuremberg.

He was simply tied to a fence.

Particular burden in the animal shelter Roth: Illegal puppy dealers and foreign animal protection organizations

The Roth animal shelter is also suffering from overcrowding.

There you have to take care of 195 dogs, cats and small animals at the moment.

According to BR, the facility is completely blocked.

They also have 29 puppies to take care of that were rescued from an illegal puppy transport of 72 animals in late July.

Since the animals have not yet been vaccinated, they still have to be kept in quarantine at the moment.

Another extra effort.

In addition, there are another 30 cats from evictions.

The animal shelter can hardly save itself from inquiries.

"Last week alone we should have taken in twelve dogs in one day," says manager Carmen Nottrott in an interview with BR.

They also annoy animal protection organizations from abroad.

They would mediate animals without first looking at the owner.

But you can't give a disturbed street dog to a family with children without further ado.

The animal shelter manager is annoyed that people overestimate themselves or only choose the animals based on their appearance.

"I can't adopt a three-year-old Jack Russell to a senior who can barely walk himself."

The animal shelters are struggling with costs – fear of winter

In addition to the high personnel costs and the limited space, there are also the running costs.

Rising energy prices and higher prices for animal feed would exacerbate the situation towards autumn, according to the German Animal Welfare Association.

The veterinary costs would also increase due to a planned adjustment of the fee schedule.

Furthermore, the increase in the minimum wage is a relevant cost factor.

To make matters worse, the willingness to donate dropped drastically during the Corona period.

56 percent of the animal shelters affiliated to the Animal Welfare Association reported lower donations for 2020.

Reasons were also canceled fundraising events or bazaars.

Animal Welfare Association President Schröder told BR: "Since the willingness of citizens to donate is noticeably decreasing due to inflation and the tense economic situation as a result of the Ukraine war, practical animal protection in Germany is threatened with the toughest autumn and winter it has ever experienced."

The animal protection association therefore demands that 50 percent of the dog tax should go to the animal shelters.

The German Association of Towns and Municipalities is against it.

A link to the dog tax cannot be implemented under budgetary law and is also not appropriate, said a spokesman at the request of the dpa.

Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) demands: “Cities and municipalities must fulfill their responsibilities and, above all, their legal obligations”.

The municipalities are responsible, for example, for better compensating for the increased costs of found animals.

"If the animal shelters do not receive any help, then the charitable animal welfare in Germany is on the verge of collapse," says the Animal Welfare Association.
