Russian ophthalmologist Professor Tatiana Shilova has warned of the possible dangerous effects of excessive use of colored lenses for cosmetic purposes, which prevents the eyes from feeding the necessary amount of oxygen.
Russia Today channel quoted Shilova: The use of these lenses for long periods, which is often unnecessarily or medically supervised, can prevent the arrival of a sufficient amount of oxygen that the eye needs, as its permeability is much less due to its colored surface, which reduces visual acuity and may lead to infections and allergic reactions. The eye negatively affects vision, weakens it and limits the ability to distinguish between colors, which hinders the performance of tasks that require visual efficiency such as driving, reading or writing, and in the most extreme cases, it may develop into blindness.
Shilova emphasized that coloring narrows the field of vision and limits side vision and even the pupil area, which reduces visual acuity and this effect increases in the evening because the pupil of the eye expands at night.
Shilova advised not to use colored lenses for more than five hours a day and to limit their use during holidays and occasions, with the need to consult an ophthalmologist before use.
