Celebration of Jobim in Yemen: "The Houthis are replacing teachers with militiamen" | Israel today

After decades - the pro-Iranian organization decided to cancel free education - and many teachers are leaving the system • "If this situation continues, we will find ourselves facing a catastrophic reality"

The ceasefire between the Saudi coalition and the Houthi militia in the war in Yemen was recently extended and has been going on for four months.

Meanwhile, according to Arab reports, the leadership of the pro-Iranian organization turned to deal specifically with the educational crisis - and decided to fire 20 thousand teachers.

The extreme step comes after cutting teachers' salaries and canceling the free education that has been customary in the country for decades.

It was reported in the Arab press that since the beginning of the ceasefire, the Houthi militia managed to collect 105 billion Yemeni riyals for fuel shipments that arrived by ship to the port of Hodeidah.

There are those who estimate that this amount was enough to cover the salaries.

A series of Yemeni intellectuals, writers and social activists issued a statement against the dismissals, which warned of the devastating effect on the country's children, many of whom also suffer from poverty and hunger.

"A year passes and one comes, and the salaries are not paid to the teachers. The educational process is deteriorating, and if this situation continues, we will find ourselves facing a catastrophic reality because the best teachers are leaving the schools," said the teacher Abd al-Jabbar Muhammad to the Arab press.

"I was surprised by the decision of the education administration in the district to transfer me and my colleagues from our school to another school far from where we live. Therefore, we decided to bring substitutes and went looking for work in private schools or in another profession," testified teacher Hanan.

In 2019, the Houthi militia established a "teacher and education support fund", which is supposed to be based on revenue from taxes on goods, but the people who benefit from it are the Houthi militiamen, who started to replace fired teachers and receive the salaries.
