Munich International Airport in southern Germany announced the cancellation of dozens of flights due to a strike organized by the Verdi union of airport ground workers, against the background of an ongoing dispute over wages.
And local media quoted the Munich airport authorities as saying in a statement: “The strike led to the cancellation of at least 36 flights, in addition to the delay of a number of flights.”
The strike affected both domestic and international flights, including regular flights to Palma de Mallorca, Florence, Bologna and Zurich.
In turn, the Verdi union said in a statement that "no progress has been made after four rounds of wage negotiations with the "Swissport Lush" company for baggage services and bus transportation at the airport, saying that "the strike has become necessary to increase pressure on the owner of the company."
The union is demanding higher wages than inflation and other improvements in working conditions.
This strike comes in response to a call from the union to demand a 10 percent wage hike, due to the wave of high prices hitting Germany against the backdrop of the rise in energy prices due to the crisis in Ukraine.
Since the lifting of health restrictions at the beginning of this year, airlines and airports have struggled to meet the demand, which is witnessing a significant increase after a slow movement that lasted two years, during which this sector lost many of its employees.
