A recent survey shows that many Germans generally exclude certain travel destinations from their vacation plans due to moral and ethical concerns.
When deciding on a travel destination, not only do the costs or existing sights play a major role for German holidaymakers - safety aspects and moral concerns also influence where the trip goes.
This is shown by a current YouGov survey commissioned by the holiday booking portal Holidaycheck.
Absence for moral reasons: These aspects play a role
Almost half of Germans (48 percent) believe that tourism can contribute to social change.
Therefore, 70 percent of those surveyed exclude certain travel destinations from their vacation plans if they have moral or ethical concerns.
Specifically, 68 percent of participants said they would stay away from a country if they didn't feel comfortable there.
66 percent remove travel destinations from their list because they do not want to support them financially, 29 percent are afraid of personal consequences and 28 percent want to set an example by not traveling to these countries.
The “most disliked” travel destinations due to moral concerns
The survey also shows which countries are avoided the most: At 30 percent, Russia was named most frequently as a travel destination that is not visited due to ethical and moral concerns.
Also unpopular are Turkey, China, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Iran and North Korea.
Here you can see the percentage of participants who named the countries:
Ranking | holiday destination | |
---|---|---|
1. | Russia | 30 percent |
2. | Turkey | 22 percent |
3. | China | 15 percent |
4. | Saudi Arabia | 6 percent |
4. | United Arab Emirates | 6 percent |
5. | Iran | 5 percent |
5. | North Korea | 5 percent |
Germans make holiday decisions primarily based on the security situation in the country
When asked directly, 73 percent of those surveyed said that they made their travel decision very heavily or heavily dependent on a critical domestic security situation in the destination country.
Crime causes 71 percent to decide on another destination.
Other factors include restrictions on freedom of expression (69 percent), systematic discrimination against women (62 percent), non-democratic forms of government (59 percent) and discrimination against minorities (57 percent).

"In our study, we clearly see that Germans want to be well informed about their own security situation, but also about the situation of the people in the travel destination - this applies equally to package and individual travelers," says Christoph Ludmann, Managing Director of Holidaycheck.
According to the survey, travelers want to know about crime in the tourist region in particular.
