The incident happened at about 3 pm yesterday (10th) when three workers at the Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel construction site were working on the working platform for the construction of the flyover, when the concrete component used to connect the flyover suddenly fell, crushing the working platform.

Three workers fell off the platform and were injured and were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment, one of whom was in critical condition.

In response to media enquiries, the Civil Engineering and Development Department stated that an industrial accident occurred at the Lam Tin Interchange site of the Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel construction project at about 3 pm yesterday, involving the construction of temporary supports for the bridge, resulting in injuries to 3 workers. Engineers, surveyors, and assemblers.

The injured were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

The project involved was carried out by the Civil Engineering and Development Department, and the contractor was the Leighton-China Construction Joint Venture.

The cause of the accident is under investigation and the Department has requested the contractor to submit an accident investigation report as soon as possible.

The Department has always attached great importance to site safety. In addition to frequent inspections, the engineering team also conducts surprise inspections of the construction situation from time to time, and strictly requires contractors to implement various safety measures.

The three male workers were injured, including a 30-year-old worker surnamed Huang and a 43-year-old local worker named Li, and a 67-year-old Nepalese worker.

Among them, Li was seriously injured, with fractures in his chest, ribs and pelvis. He was still in critical condition after being hospitalized on the 1st. In addition, Huang’s foot was injured, and the Nepalese worker suffered head and foot injuries. The two are currently in serious condition.

On-site information said that the site was undergoing tunnel overpass construction at the time, during which the work platform suddenly collapsed, and as a result, three workers fell from the work platform.

After investigation by the police at the scene, it is believed that the three workers involved were working on the connection of tunnel pipes on a work platform about 7 meters high, and a piece of concrete about 5 meters long and 3 meters high fell to the platform, causing the platform It collapsed and three people fell off the platform and were injured.

The case is classified as an industrial accident.

A deadly industrial accident occurred at the Blue Tunnel site in March 2020. A 37-year-old hoisting worker surnamed Lai was knocked unconscious by a piece of "I-beam" about 17 meters long and 1.3 meters wide, and was confirmed dead after being sent to the hospital.

After investigation, the police believe that a 5-meter by 3-meter piece of concrete used for connecting the flyover fell and crushed the platform.
