Opinion Dawn - Post mortem | Israel today

2022-08-11T04:44:57.448Z

It doesn't matter if Michaeli or Smotrich are in the government - the Gazan terrorism will always force a response on us, and our unwillingness to control Gaza will always make the response measured

Three comments following the letter written by Prime Minister Lapid at the end of Operation "Dawn":

A.

The left has a long love affair with the word "dawn".

At the time, Ehud Barak promised the Israelis the dawn of a new day.

It did end with the most brutal terrorist wave in the country's history - the second intifada, but in the election campaign that preceded it, the phrase sounded good.

The current and successful operation in Gaza also boasts a similar name: "Dawn", to teach you that everything that preceded it was nothing but fumbling in the dark, whereas now, when the confident hand of the fresh ruling party Yesh Atid is at the wheel, then as Lapid wrote in his letter: "The operation Restored Israeli deterrence."

This spin of Lapid is reminiscent of the joke about two friends sitting in a restaurant.

There is a single olive left in the pickle plate, and one of them tries to catch it with a fork over and over without success.

When he despairs, the other manages to capture him with the first blow.

The friend who failed looks at him in frustration and says: "Well, that's not wisdom - I tired him out for you."

In the "Dawn" operation, the Palestinian enemy from Shul to Zeit was especially tired - the Palestinians fought with one hand and a half tied behind their backs, because the main terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip, Hamas, avoided entering the conflict.

And why did he avoid?

True - because of the Israeli deterrence achieved in "Guardian of the Walls" and all the rounds that preceded it.

The people of Israel went into shelters, the best of their sons from all ends of the political spectrum put themselves at risk every night in raids on the Yosh, which unfortunately sometimes involve casualties to our forces, and in his victory letter the prime minister who sends them does not hold back and also spins a cheap and very unstately political spin in preparation for the elections.

B.

Here is actually a more royal sentence from the letter: "I also want to thank the opposition, the leader of the opposition Netanyahu, who showed responsibility and gave support to the government throughout the operation."

This is really the spirit that should be in such an epistle, which addresses the entire nation in a time of struggle.

It's just a shame that as the head of the opposition, a week into Operation Wall Guard - which, unlike "Dawn", was not initiated by Israel, but following the firing of rockets into Jerusalem (!) - Lapid did not take care to disclose the responsibility he attributes to Netanyahu.

On the contrary, he did not hesitate to question while fighting the considerations that led to the launch of the operation and said: "If we had a government, no one would ask themselves why the fire always breaks out exactly when it is most convenient for the prime minister."

In the days when all kinds of saviors on their own behalf are establishing boutique parties for the moment, to save the "state right", it is interesting to discover that, at least according to the measure of national responsibility in times of battle, the left lacks the vitamin of statehood.

third.

In the end, what can be learned from the "Dawn" operation is that it doesn't matter if Merav Michaeli or Bezalel Smotrich sits on the edge of the government table - Gazan terrorism will always force a response on us, and our unwillingness to control Gaza will always make the response measured.

With all due respect (and there is respect!) to the IDF, no new dawn has dawned and probably will not dawn on Gaza.

What we saw this week is the same lady changing a letter.

Were we wrong?

We will fix it!
