After the opening ceremony, the European Championships 2022 have started.

Citizens must be prepared for traffic delays - and keep an eye on their cars.

Munich – The start was impressive: The European Championships began on Wednesday evening with a big summer party.

55,000 people came to the Olympic Park to experience the opening ceremony.

"The influx was enormous," says Thomas Madl, head of police operations.

The number of visitors exceeded the organizer's expectations.

He had to close the festival site, where there were free concerts by the band Moop Mama, among others, around 8 p.m. for a certain time.

A situation that, according to the police, never became threatening due to the size of the site: "There were enough alternative areas," explains Madl.

European Championships in Munich: Attention drivers - it will be towed

With the start of the European Championships, the focus of interest since Thursday is no longer just on the Olympic Park, where the celebrations are taking place, but on large parts of the city.

The competitions take place on the Königsplatz and the Odeonsplatz, among other places.

This poses new challenges for the police.

Because: Among other things, extensive road closures are necessary for the marathon and the cycle races.

According to Madl, it is important that citizens comply with the partly new stopping bans.

"We already had to tow 91 vehicles," said the operations manager on Thursday.

Therefore the appeal of the police: repark cars, but also parked trailers or mobile homes!

Observe no parking restrictions: New zones have been set up in many parts of the city for the competitions.

The vehicles urgently need to be relocated.

Munich is threatened with serious traffic delays because of the European Championships

The most important road closures at a glance: The police expect significant traffic disruptions, especially on the two Sundays, August 14th and 21st, when the professional cycle races take place.

Many streets in Ludwigsvorstadt and Schwanthalerhöhe (Theresienhöhe, Schwanthalerstrasse, Sonnenstrasse, Bavariaring) as well as in the city center and in Lehel (Stachus, Lenbachplatz, Brienner Strasse, Prinzregentenstrasse to Europaplatz) will be closed on both days from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

In addition, Ludwigstrasse (from Von-der-Tann-Strasse to Siegestor) will be blocked from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days.

In the afternoon, routes on the outskirts of the city from Forstenrieder Allee to Plinganserstraße in the direction of the city center are also partially closed for the bike race.

Parked cars on the bike course will be towed away.

The marathon follows on Monday, August 15: Between 6:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., streets in the city center and in Lehel (e.g. Residenzstrasse and Prinzregentenstrasse), around Gärtnerplatz and in Schwabing (e.g. Leopoldstrasse) are closed.

During the European Championships and sometimes beyond, some streets around the Königsplatz are also affected by the closures - this is where the beach volleyball and climbing competitions take place.
