Does the pension system have to be saved with a later entry age?

In an interview, a craftsman points out that the consequences of physical work are not taken into account.

Berlin – The German pension system is on shaky ground.

Especially in the coming years, when the baby boomer generation will retire, financing the pension will become an ever greater problem.

Because then there will be fewer and fewer people who pay into the pension fund for more and more retirees.

This problem has also persuaded the head of the entire metal industry, Stefan Wolf, to speak out in favor of a later retirement age.

He would be in favor of Germans working until they are 70.

Retirement at 70 is hardly possible for craftsmen

While economists think the idea makes perfect sense, retiring at 70 is getting a lot of headwind, especially on social media.

One Twitter user notes that retiring at 70 may be an option for people who work in offices.

However, workers in all other jobs could not work as long – because: “The body is then in the bucket for most,” she writes.

Kevin Wöhe, who works as a painter, is also of the opinion that physically demanding jobs should be taken into account when planning retirement.

"You can tell that people underestimate how 20, 25 years in the trade make themselves felt," he says

.

At the age of 40, everyone would start to feel the first aches and pains – if not worse.

He is aware that there are even tougher jobs, such as scaffolding or roofing.

But painting also becomes a backbreaking job, especially in the summer when the temperatures are high, he says.

He particularly lacks empathy in the discussion about pensions.

“You can probably hold political office until you are 80 or 90, but not such physical jobs.

You can only understand that if you've done it yourself for a long time," he notes to

Heil rejects retirement at 70 – and advocates flexibility

After all: Federal Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil (SPD) consistently rejects the increase in the retirement age.

“What I think is right is the flexible transition to retirement.

That's perfectly fine," said the SPD politician to the newspapers of the

Funke media group

.

"But the idea that you should work in a steel mill or at the supermarket checkout, as a police officer or as a nurse up to the age of 70 can only be had by people who live in a completely different world."
