Through more than 40 institutes and nursing homes distributed in various governorates, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor provides services for residency, education, vocational training, health care, rehabilitation and psychosocial support for persons with disabilities, those without family care, children of unknown parentage, juveniles, homeless and beggars.

Specialized therapeutic and interactive programs and activities provided by the Institute, in addition to teaching educational curricula according to each academic stage, appropriate for the age of the beneficiary of the services of these institutes or the disability he suffers from, according to the Director of Social Services at the Ministry, Awatef Hassan.

In a statement to SANA, Hassan explained that a number of social welfare institutes were out of service due to the terrorist war on Syria, and the ministry worked to rehabilitate a number of them and support the work of the institutes that continued to operate despite the difficult conditions, as there are institutes specialized for people with disabilities through education according to the curriculum of the Ministry of Education, in addition to To the physical therapy service for people with motor disabilities.

Regarding the institutes that care for people with hearing disabilities, Hassan said that they focus on the educational aspect of the curricula from the first grade to the secondary stage in sign language. The institutes of special education for the blind also provide the same services through education in Braille, in addition to the presence of a professional department that trains on some simple crafts that are suitable for people with disabilities. Visual disability.

Hassan added that the institutes of special education for people with cerebral palsy offer educational services and physical therapy to all enrolled students according to each case, and focus in their programs on developing the skills of this category to support their abilities in the field of education.

According to Hassan, the vocational rehabilitation institutes for people with disabilities are concerned with training in a number of trades and professions, including computers, electricity, trade, women's tailoring, and men's and women's haircuts. They receive persons with disabilities from the age of 12 to 35 to facilitate their entry into the labor market.

Hassan pointed out that the social welfare institutes also include the care of juveniles who have been subjected to a legal penalty with the aim of keeping them out of prison, as these institutes work on caring for the juvenile child “under the age of 18” through an educational and reformative educational program with the aim of rehabilitating them, integrating them into society, and following them up after leaving the institute.

On the role of caring for beggars and vagrants, Hassan indicated that the aim is to provide the necessary care and services for the internal residence of this category, to train them professionally, to provide them with health and educational services, and to help some of them find work.

The Ministry, through the “Lane of Life” Institute in Damascus, provides a variety of services for children of unknown parentage, through a family atmosphere, comprehensive care provided by surrogate mothers, educational and social programs, psychological and legal counselling, in addition to various health, living and educational services at various educational levels, and capacity-building and skills.
