OUR FAVORITE COCKTAILS (9/12): To shine during your summer evenings, Le Figaro invites you to come back to the origin of these popular drinks.

Knowing a crazy success in the south of France, the "monaco" is one of the favorite cocktails of the French.

Composed of beer, lemonade and grenadine, we like to drink it chilled on the shores of the Riviera beaches.

The colors of a flag

Many legends revolve around the origin of the cocktail.

It is often said that it owes its name to the color of these ingredients, the white of the lemonade and the red of the grenadine recalling the Monegasque flag.

In reality, behind Monaco, is a certain George Booth.

This bartender was indeed inspired by an American cocktail called "Snakebite" (snakebite), made up of beer and cider.

Thus was born the monaco which continues to be called "Snakebite" outside the French-speaking countries, in particular in Australia.

Yet in France as in Belgium, the name "monaco" has established itself.

The aperitif even gave its name during the Second World War to the "meeting known as Monaco", of guerrillas from Isère at the Hôtel de la Poste in Méaudre on January 25, 1944.
