A year after their return to power, the Afghan Taliban continue their quest for respectability.
While no country has recognized the theocratic regime, it is leading a peace mediation between Pakistan and the Pakistani Taliban Movement (TTP).
Founded in 2007, the terrorist group is waging a merciless war against Islamabad which has claimed more than 66,000 lives, according to American Brown University.
The chances are slim that the two parties will find common ground.
A series of negotiations conducted at the end of 2021 had failed.
The new discussions started in the spring are also going straight into the wall.
A delegation of Pakistani ulemas returned empty-handed from Kabul on July 30, after the TTP refused to review its demands: it notably claims the establishment in Pakistan of a political regime modeled on that of the Afghan Taliban.
