For a long time now, there are no longer 10 euros from every ten euro: high inflation is a particular burden for people with a small budget.

District – Inflation also affects income in Miesbach.

So far, households have lost around 47 million euros in purchasing power due to rising prices.

Inflation eats up income: Due to rapidly rising prices, households in the district of Miesbach will lose around 47 million euros in purchasing power in 2022 - provided that the previous rate of inflation does not continue to rise.

For groceries alone, consumers have to reckon with additional expenditure of 22 million euros.

This is reported by the Food, Enjoyment and Restaurants Union (NGG).

The NGG relies on a regional purchasing power analysis by the Pestel Institute.

Social upheaval due to rising prices

According to this, people with tight wallets are particularly affected: In the 19,500 households in which single parents and single people with a monthly net income of less than 2,000 euros live in the district of Miesbach, the projected loss of purchasing power from heating to shopping in the supermarket by the end of the year amounts to 12, 1 million euros.

NGG regional manager Manuel Halbmeier speaks of alarming numbers.

The price increases threaten social upheaval if politicians do not take timely countermeasures with further, targeted relief.

"From the waiter to the bakery saleswoman - employees who are not top earners currently have to turn over every cent twice," says the trade unionist.

"Anyone who has to see how he can get by until the end of the month anyway will have a huge impact on the current additional expenses."

Food prices particular inflation drivers

According to the Pestel Institute, the increased food prices are a particular driver of inflation: in the first half of the year, the average household in the district of Miesbach has to bear an additional burden of 38 euros a month for food alone.

The additional expenses for energy amount to 34 euros per month.

Mobility increased by 9 euros.

According to NGG observations, the price jumps in supermarkets hit people who work with food themselves particularly hard – whether in restaurants, breweries or bakery factories.

In 2022, the union succeeded in achieving substantial wage increases through wage agreements, for example in the hospitality industry.

However, inflation threatens to wipe them out.

Energy price caps to protect households

“What we need now is special help for low-income workers, but also for pensioners, students and job seekers.

The current relief packages from the federal government are not sufficient.

The traffic light has to be quicker,” demands Halbmeier.

The managing director of the NGG region Rosenheim-Oberbayern is in favor of an energy price cap to protect private households from rising costs for gas and electricity.

All relief must be socially balanced.

Halbmeier: “Strong shoulders can carry more than weak ones.

It would therefore also be logical for the rich to have a greater share in financing the burden of the crisis – for example through a one-off wealth levy.”
