Drought emergency in Great Britain: Tory politician Sunak has a private pool complex built

The British government is paving the way for irrigation bans in parts of the country due to drought. Apparently, this does not affect the possible future Tory party leader: he is having a private swimming pool built.

Persistent drought is currently affecting large parts of Great Britain.

In view of rising prices, many people are also worried about heavy additional payments, for example for energy costs.

Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, on the other hand, probably applies different standards when it comes to water consumption and private savings measures.

The wealthy Tory politician, who is currently fighting a duel with Foreign Secretary Liz Truss to succeed Prime Minister Boris Johnson, wants to have a swimming pool built on his property, according to media reports.

British media are now reporting, citing aerial photographs of the Conservative's property in North Yorkshire, that construction of the reservoir is in full swing.

While many Britons are concerned about massive price increases in energy costs and probably have to cope with heavy additional payments, Sunak's private pool should cost at least 120,000 pounds and be twelve by five meters in size, according to the "Independent".

Sunak is planning a leisure area with a tennis court

Combined with the annex that appears to have already been built to house fitness equipment, showers and changing rooms, the report says the cost could be more than three times as much.

The recreational area will also include a tennis court.

Approval for the construction of the sports complex had therefore already been given last year.

The 42-year-old and his wife Akshata Murty have a combined fortune estimated at around £700million.

Murty is the daughter of, and holds shares in, Indian businessman Narayana Murthy, who founded the software company Infosys.

Sunak himself also brought considerable wealth into the marriage.

The former analyst at investment bank Goldman Sachs is reported to have been a multi-millionaire in his 20s.

While temperatures in England are currently inviting for a dip, the Sunaks' new pool is difficult to reconcile with government action.

The British Environment Ministry officially declared a drought for eight out of fourteen regions on Friday.

According to the Guardian, this makes it easier for water suppliers to implement bans on garden irrigation.

A ban on washing cars, windows and buildings is also possible.

Public swimming pool threatened with closure

But Sunak's private pool isn't just piquant because of the lack of water in parts of the country.

As the "Mirror" reports, among others, a public swimming pool in Sunak's Richmond constituency is currently threatened with closure.

According to this, the bathroom is facing massively increased costs due to the energy crisis - there is therefore no hope of state support.
