Günter Wallraff expressed his shock at the attack on writer Salman Rushdie.
"The news was of course a blow for me," said the author and investigative journalist on Friday evening at the German Press Agency in Cologne.
"Now I just hope that the injury is not life-threatening." Rushdie, who was sentenced to death by fatwa more than 30 years ago, was attacked by a man and injured in the neck during a performance in upstate New York on Friday.
Cologne – Wallraff (79) hid Rushdie in his house in Cologne-Ehrenfeld in 1993.
"Back then there was round-the-clock security, armored cars were parked in front of the door." In recent years, however, Rushdie would have refused personal protection.
“We met at an event in Denmark a few years ago.
A lot of attention was paid to his protection, which he had not asked for at all.
He wanted to lead a normal life.” dpa
