Gilching - How can you contribute to peace?

In Gilching, the pax christi group commemorates the atomic bombing of Hiroshima every year.

Ukraine will also be considered this year.

Candles are lit for peace.

On the evening of August 6th, 77 years after the atomic bomb was dropped, the pax christi group Gilching commemorated the victims of these catastrophes and the current crises in this world.

The current situation in Ukraine was discussed at the beginning.

On February 24, Russia began a war of aggression in violation of international law.

For many older people, memories of the Second World War were awakened at the commemoration by the images from the war zones.

Then, representing all crises on our planet, one trouble spot per continent was addressed and a candle was placed on the peace pole.

Then the situation 77 years ago was remembered, when hundreds of thousands of people died immediately as a result of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Martin Pilgram reported on the first state conference of the nuclear weapons ban states six weeks ago in Vienna.

There it became clear once again that any nuclear war would also severely affect those who were not involved, simply because of the ecological effects.

The countries of the Global South, in particular, refused to do so.

For them, only nuclear disarmament is an option for a safe world.

Especially because Russia is threatening to use nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war and the USA is still not ruling out the first strike.

With his saxophone, Erich Lutz gave the commemoration a worthy setting.

On Sunday, August 7th, the spiritual advisory board of pax christi celebrated the Hiroshima memorial service in front of the Gilching parish church of St. Sebastian.

He quoted the Pope's message to the Conference of Non-Nuclear Weapons States: "The Holy See has no doubt that a world free of nuclear weapons is necessary and possible.

There is no place for nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in a system of shared security.

Here I would like to reiterate that both the use and the possession of nuclear weapons is immoral.”
