INTERVIEW – The leader of the Italian nationalist party is at the top of the voting intentions for the legislative elections in September. A specialist in Italian politics, the professor of history and political sociology Marc Lazar deciphers his trajectory.

Fratelli d'Italia is a recent party, born in 2012, which comes from an old political family which is that of neofascism and post-fascism at the same time, marked by the Italian Social Movement (MSI) created after the Second World War then by the National Alliance from the 1990s. The latter party gradually emerged from its relationship with the fascist heritage, as Fratelli d'Italia leader Giorgia Meloni is currently trying to do.

But the Fratelli d'Italia party is above all an opposition party today since it has not taken part in any government since its creation.

He was in opposition to the technical government of Mario Monti (2011-2013), of the long legislature…
