The military aviation authority has announced that it will raise the minimum radar guidance altitude for Lechfeld air base.

This increases the chances that the municipality of Krailling will be able to set up wind turbines in the Kreuzlinger Forest.

Krailling

– The municipality of Krailling plans to erect up to four wind turbines in the Kreuzlinger Forest to the east of the A 96 motorway.

For this purpose, the Landsberg engineering office Sing has had potential locations examined in the area between Frohnloh in the south and Germering in the north.

A first hurdle for the major project has now been cleared.

Height restriction raised

The project area is in the military control area of the Bundeswehr at the Lechfeld site near Augsburg.

For the radar guidance of the military airport there, there are minimum heights above which no structural obstacles may protrude.

To date, this has been a knockout criterion for wind turbines, which – in order to operate them economically – should have a height of at least 240 to 250 meters.

However, the height limit has been raised and will now be 836 meters above sea level.

Which enables wind turbines on the Kraillinger Flur, but prevents the potential locations in the southern district of Starnberg, which were identified in the 2012 partial land use plan, due to their topographical location.

In a second step, Krailling now wants to find out whether the flight paths of the Oberpfaffenhofen special airport prevent the construction of wind turbines.

"I'm not an expert there, the experts have to talk to each other," says Mayor Rudolph Haux.

According to the planning by the engineering office Sing, the announced locations for the four wind turbines are on a north-south axis at a distance of 600 meters from each other.

"There has not yet been any investigation for specific plots of land, only areas within the framework of the special land use plan for wind power from 2012." According to Mayor Haux, the owners, the Bavarian State Forests and private individuals, are currently being written to.

In this matter, he is also in close contact with the counterparts from Germering and the municipality of Gilching,

Strong public participation desired

Haux has emphasized in the past that the community does not intend to appear as a builder, rather they will be looking for investors.

He prefers a structure with strong citizen participation, such as a citizens' cooperative of surrounding communities.

According to the mayor of Krailling, the project can be implemented within four or five years at the earliest, as a large number of environmentally relevant issues have to be clarified.

He expects protests from the population against the large-scale project, but hopes that these will remain within manageable limits.

"I think that in the meantime the population has also come to realize that it is not so bad to generate the energy on site."
