Herrsching - When 78 women and men from 40 countries meet in the House of Bavarian Agriculture, it has a lasting effect.

They collect ideas and then contribute to the sustainable development of rural areas in their home country.

How to do that.

For the 30th time, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) is organizing the "International Seminar for Managers in Rural Youth Work", which was recently opened with a ceremony in the House of Bavarian Agriculture (HdbL) in Herrsching.

It lasts until August 23 and is aimed specifically at managers who work full-time or on a voluntary basis in rural youth work and in rural areas.

In their home countries, they act as multipliers of the newly acquired knowledge and skills and thus bring about diverse further development.

Starnberg's District Administrator Stefan Frey comes to the opening

The opening ceremony included Dr.

Hanns-Christoph Eiden, President of the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food in Bonn, and Stefan Frey, District Administrator of the Starnberg district.

Under the motto "Ready to act - consciously accepting challenges", the 78 participants from 40 countries will work together intensively over the next two weeks to further develop rural areas worldwide.

Agriculture with growing challenges from climate change and war

"Young women and men in rural areas are the future of agriculture, the lever for food security and the reduction of rural poverty," says Günther Strobl, head of the seminar and director of the House of Bavarian Agriculture.

“Their energy and dynamism are crucial to the transformation of our food systems and rural areas amid growing challenges from climate change, armed conflicts and the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the same time, rural youth around the world face various obstacles.

A lack of or limited access to land, financial means or natural resources, but also to education, information and knowledge make it difficult for young people to fully exploit their potential.

It is therefore all the more gratifying

that the seminar can take place again in 2022 after a compulsory break due to Corona in the previous year.

It is about the contemporary interpretation of the founding goals of the international seminar in Herrsching.

And about consciously accepting challenges and being able to actively shape change.

Through the international dialogue, the participants gain new perspectives for overcoming local challenges.

The participatory approach of the seminar enables the participants to develop their leadership skills and to develop implementation strategies and personal action plans for the time after the seminar.”

"The positive response to the invitation illustrates the current great demand for the international seminar," explains Dr.

Hanns Christoph Eiden.

“There are historical moments when time changes direction.

We are in such a turning point right now.

The diverse and coexisting threats and crises we face around the world require answers, but they also harbor opportunities.

The motto of the 30th International Seminar could not have been more appropriate.

Successful joint action in diversity is crucial in order to master global challenges and to become and remain resilient.”

District Administrator Stefan Frey is also calling for a rethink and a change of direction on site

"Welcome to the district of Starnberg!

We, too, have to rethink and change course here on site.

The international seminar is an excellent and proven platform for this,” said Starnberg District Administrator Stefan Frey to the seminar participants.

Learn methods and techniques and use them at home

“It is a unique opportunity to meet so many people from different cultures under one roof.

I am particularly looking forward to learning more about rural development in other countries, understanding the challenges, as well as getting to know best methods and techniques from other participants so that I can then apply them at home,” says participant Geo Sebastian from India after the opening ceremony.

New impetus for overcoming challenges

Antonia Kainz, participant in the seminar in 2019 and chairwoman of the working group of rural youth in the Bavarian Farmers' Association and state chairwoman of the Catholic rural youth movement in Bavaria (KLJB) explains: "Even the mostly small and medium-sized agricultural family businesses in Bavaria always need new impetus to meet the challenges of increasing globalization of agriculture.

This also plays an important role in the work of the Bavarian rural youth: Challenges that arise globally cannot only be mastered locally.

This is exactly where it becomes clear how important the international seminar is for family businesses in Bavaria.”

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture is responsible for the seminar.

The seminar administration is in the hands of the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food in Bonn.

The House of Bavarian Agriculture in Herrsching is responsible for the conception and implementation of this seminar, which is unique in the world.

The content of the program is supplemented by a targeted framework program, through which the participants not only get to know the region of Upper Bavaria and its development, but can also gather impulses for their own rural youth work.

This year, the focus of the specialist excursions in rural areas is how change can be shaped - in harmony with nature and the environment, with the help of education and advice, in and with agriculture, as well as in society and rural areas.
