According to current knowledge, the knife attack on an employee of the Wuppertal immigration office hit the 25-year-old rather by accident.

"As far as we know, she was not the person responsible for the suspect," said a spokesman for the Wuppertal public prosecutor's office on Friday.

The act was preceded by “disagreements” between the man and the job center located in the same building about receiving benefits.

Wuppertal - The 20-year-old Syrian should be brought before a magistrate on Friday.

So far he has not commented on the crime or his motive.

There are "certain indications of a mental illness" from his file, said the prosecutor.

Nevertheless, he considers the man to be guilty.

Accordingly, he will apply for pre-trial detention and not his placement in a psychiatric ward.

The suspect initially behaved inconspicuously and suddenly pulled out a kitchen knife, it was said on Friday.

The woman was stabbed twice in the shoulder.

Her colleagues held the alleged perpetrator until the police arrived.

In the "House of Integration" in Wuppertal, where the crime took place, there are several institutions such as the immigration office and the job center that take care of immigrants and refugees.

The 25-year-old was seriously injured but was not life-threatening.

The "House of Integration" should also remain closed on Friday.

A city spokeswoman said security personnel would be increased when the city reopened on Monday.

There is no metal lock at the entrance so far.

The German Association of Civil Servants and the Komba North Rhine-Westphalia union had previously called for better protection for employees.
