The Russian Embassy in Washington announced its support for the special message calling for the complete and unconditional unfreezing of the international reserves of the Central Bank of Afghanistan.
Yesterday, more than 70 economists and experts signed a letter addressed to US President Joe Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen calling for Washington to unfreeze the assets of the Afghan Central Bank. Among the signatories were Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz and former Greek Finance Minister Janis Varoufakis.
“We fully support this appeal, and we consider the situation in which the US authorities are illegally withholding the financial resources of the Afghan people as unacceptable, and we consider their bargaining with Kabul on the terms of allocating half of the amount to them as rude,” RIA Novosti news agency quoted diplomats from the Russian Embassy in Washington as saying in a statement.
Last February, US President Joe Biden signed an executive order freezing $7 billion of the assets of the Afghan Central Bank in US banks.
