The Indian writer, against whom the Iranian regime issued a fatwa in the 1980s, was stabbed while presenting at an event organized by the Chautauqua Foundation in New York.
The attacker was arrested and Rushdi's condition is unclear.
The writer was attacked while standing on stage by an unknown person whose identity has not yet been published.
A reporter for the AP news agency.
Asher who was present at the scene detailed that the attacker stabbed and beat Rushdi while he was lying on the floor.
The motive for the attack is unclear, but it should be noted that in 1988 Rushdie published his book "The Satanic Verses", a critical work against the Prophet Muhammad that was received with astonishment and anger in the Muslim world and was even banned for distribution in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Following this, the supreme leader at the time, Ayatollah Rola Khomeini, issued a halachic ruling ordering Rushdi to be killed for what was perceived as blasphemy.
