The police recorded several shock calls in the region on Thursday.

A 95-year-old woman narrowly escaped the scam.

With other seniors, however, the scammers were successful.

Weilheim/Schongau - A 95-year-old lady from the Weilheim-Schongau district received a so-called "shock call" on Thursday morning, August 11, according to the Oberbayern Süd police headquarters, in which she was told that her cousin had died in a traffic accident in Munich Bub would have fatally injured.

The woman believed the callers and went to her bank to withdraw the requested money.

Luckily, she met an acquaintance on the way there, whom she finally confided in and who recognized the fraud.

This could be averted at the last minute and the lady was not harmed.

Elderly women receive a shock call and hand over cash and jewelry to scammers

Two 80- and 86-year-old seniors from the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen were less fortunate.

As reported by the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South, the two received a call at noon from a crying woman who pretended to be her daughter.

The elderly women were told by a "lawyer" that their daughters had caused a fatal accident and would now have to pay a large sum of money to avoid imprisonment.

The frightened women believed the fabricated story and, after lengthy phone calls, finally handed over cash and jewelery worth around 90,000 euros to a courier who had visited them at home.

An 86-year-old from the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen also received such a shock call.

Particularly brazen: Shortly thereafter, the 86-year-old rang again and now an alleged detective from the fraud department reported, who assured him that everything was correct and that he could hand over his money without any worries.

It is thanks to a fortunate circumstance that the senior contacted the right police to ask for the telephone number of the fraud department, so that fortunately no money was handed over.

Police warn of shock calls - this is how you behave properly

The perfidious tricks of the scammers are well known, but unfortunately it is still mainly senior citizens who fall victim to the invented stories, which means that they sometimes lose horrendous sums of money.

As is usual in such cases in southern Upper Bavaria, in the case of the two women from the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the criminal police inspectorate with central tasks takes over the investigation.

The police never tire of warning of these scams over and over again and strongly recommend:

  • Do not allow yourself to be put under pressure, not even by allegedly urgent investigations, e.g.

    B. to a burglary in the vicinity or an urgent deposit to be paid!

  • The police will never ask you for cash, money transfers or valuables to conduct an investigation!

    Just hang up!

  • Never give out information about your belongings, your cash and your valuables on the phone!

    Just hang up!

  • Do not let anyone into your home who wants to see where you keep your money or jewellery!

  • Never call back using the number displayed on the phone!

    DO NOT press redial.

Hang up and then dial the emergency number 110!

  • Always file a complaint with your police station, even if you try it!

  • The younger generation in particular is expressly requested: Speak openly about the perfidious scams of telephone scammers and thus sensitize your close relatives and acquaintances who could become victims of such sneaky calls.
