The increase in the basic monthly salary (SMB) in the private sector remains lower than the increase in the cost of living everywhere in France.

The basic monthly salary index (SMB) in the private sector increased by 1% in the second quarter of 2022, less than the cost of living, according to provisional data published Friday by the Ministry of Labor.

The SMB, measured in private companies (excluding agriculture) with 10 or more employees, represents the gross salary, ie before the deduction of social security contributions and the payment of social benefits.

It does not take into account bonuses or overtime.

Over one year, the monthly salary increased by 3.0%, after an increase of 2.3% in the previous quarter, according to Dares, the statistics service of the ministry.

But "

these developments must be set against inflation

," said the organization in a press release.

The cost of living has indeed increased by 6.1% since July 2021, according to final figures from INSEE published on Friday, the highest level of inflation since July 1985.
