British writer Salman Rushdie was allegedly attacked by a man on stage at the Chautauqua Institution in New York State.
The author of "Satanic Verses", under threat of a fatwa since 1989, was about to go on stage when he was attacked.
His condition remains unknown at this time.
The perpetrator was detained, according to the first witnesses on the spot.

After living for ten years under police protection, the writer had resumed a normal life in New York, where he has lived since 1999.
