This Emnid survey has been on my mind for seven years: At the time, a majority of Germans preferred the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany to the Olympic Games.

huh?

So people would rather watch a football match between Denmark and Bulgaria than watch the world's fastest 100-meter sprinters, swimmers or gymnasts?

Of course, this also has to do with the fact that the football stadiums have already been built, while other (short-term) arenas still had to be built.

And yet this prioritization surprises me.

But now we have this mini Olympics, that is, the European Championships, right in front of us.

And thanks to the German track and field athletes, we Erdingers are right in the middle of it instead of just being there.

Just like 20 years ago.

What do we still know from back then?

There are anecdotes that a pole vaulter took his sports equipment to the hotel room.

Not that a competitor would saw through the expensive fiberglass...

Why then Erding?

It shouldn't have been due to the sports facility, as DLV General Director Idriss Gonschinska very gently hinted.

Back then it was just the location, which he still thinks is perfect today, namely "the mix of proximity to the event and still the peace and quiet out here".

But now he also raves about the sports facilities.

The general conditions are exceptional.

And that is thanks to the city of Erding and its sports mayor.

The fact that the DLV OB Max Gotz has now awarded a golden medal of merit is more than just the usual gift.

The association has recognized that Erding actually does a lot for athletics and his club TSV, while less than 20 kilometers away, a no less active and successful TSV Dorfen does not even have a 400-meter track, but only 333 meters.

333 – big brawl?

No, because the comparison is unfair because the hands of the Dorfen city council are pretty tightly tied due to the planned outsourcing of sports facilities.

So here only a meek "Boooo" to the Isen, but all the more powerful applause for the political designers in Erding.

The Sepp-Brenninger-Stadion is not only a blessing for the DLV, because German championships can also take place here in the future, and for the local promotion of young talent.

But also for school sports, which would then of course have to be equipped with the appropriate specialist staff and number of hours.

However, this is no longer in the hands of the municipality.

This year the district has an athlete in Mona Mayer in the DLV squad.

Maybe in 20 years there will be a few more at the next European Championships in Munich.

Or maybe even at the Olympic Games.

But for now have fun in the coming days - and in 2024 at the European Football Championship.

Because one thing doesn't exclude the other - in contrast to the World Cup in Qatar.

But that's a whole different story.
