Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin said that the United States should bear the consequences of undermining bilateral relations and completely spoiling China-US anti-drug cooperation.
And a White House official said that Washington rejects the Chinese move to suspend cooperation with the United States on combating drug smuggling, including (illegal fentanyl), adding that the current outbreak of fentanyl overdoses claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people in the United States last year.
"In ignoring the stern warning and repeated protests by China, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi insisted on her provocative visit to China's Taiwan region, which severely undermined the political foundation of Sino-US relations," Wang said at a press conference reported by Xinhua yesterday.
The Chinese spokesman said that the eight countermeasures taken by China, including the suspension of China-US anti-drug cooperation, are in response to this provocative action, and these measures are reasonable and appropriate.
According to Wang, according to the International Narcotics Control Board, the United States is the largest producer and consumer of fentanyl-like substances in the world, and Americans, who represent 5 percent of the world's population, consume 80 percent of the world's opiates.
Wang pointed out that fentanyl is not a big problem in China and has not been widely abused at all, adding that based on a humanitarian and responsible attitude, China helped the United States solve the fentanyl abuse crisis.
He added that China is the first country in the world to implement full control of fentanyl-like substances, while the United States, which has the most prominent problem in the use of fentanyl worldwide, did not fully control fentanyl-like substances.
Wang stressed that China's stance is firm on strict drug control, China has achieved remarkable results in drug control, and will continue to actively cooperate on international and multilateral drug control.
