Ochsenhausen - With three "giants" of the performing arts, the municipal gallery Fruchtkasten in the local monastery complex beautifies our summer.

Even if each of the artists justifies their own exhibition: the head of the cultural department, Michael Schmid-Sax, had good reasons for selecting these three influential painters of classical modernism for a joint exhibition.

Chagall, Miró and Picasso were all born in the last years of the 19th century and all lived to a similar age, namely 90 years and older.

They knew each other and were friends and the center of their life and work in adulthood was Paris.

All three were also political people: Picasso and Miró were active on the side of the Republicans against General Franco's fascist coup in Spain, Chagall, who was born and raised in Vitebsk, Russia, was enthusiastic about the Russian revolution and even became a "commissioner" in 1918 for the Fine Arts”.

Chagall, Miró and Picasso not only dealt with painting, but also made “excursions” into ceramics or literature.

Yet:

Marc Chagall shows himself from the poetic, colorful and dreamy side, cheerful and melancholic with floating lovers, mythical creatures and bouquets of flowers;

the longing for his rural Russian homeland has accompanied him throughout his life.

In “Arabian Nights” in 1948, color took possession of Chagall's graphic work for the first time and from then on it was to remain decisive for his lithographic work.

Until then, there were only hand-colored etchings by him.

Joan Miró was influenced by the nature and cave paintings of his native Catalonia.

With his forms and codes he developed his own mysterious motif language: sun, moon, stars, birds, snakes and the woman.

With the primary colors red, yellow and blue, he creates a mostly cheerful and imaginative world.

Pablo Picasso was probably the most famous painter of his time.

With Cubism, he founded a completely new era in art.

The relationship between man and woman occupied him throughout his life, as did his commitment to peace.

The dove motif on the poster he designed for the Paris World Peace Congress in 1949 became a worldwide symbol of peace.

The exhibition in the fruit box invites you to linger during the summer holidays and beyond, not only on rainy days.

Even when it's really hot outside, the pleasantly air-conditioned exhibition rooms in the historic walls offer a relaxing atmosphere.

It is open every day except Mondays until October 9th.
