Italy's worst drought in decades has reduced the water level in Lake Garda, the country's largest lake, to nearly an all-time low.
And the Associated Press stated in a report today that under these conditions, areas of rocks that were previously submerged under water were exposed, while the water temperatures in the lake approached the average temperatures in the Caribbean, especially since northern Italy had not seen rain for months, and the precipitation decreased. Snow has fallen by 70 percent this year, drying up important rivers such as the Po River, which flows through Italy's agricultural and industrial heartland.
The drought in the Po, Italy's longest river, has caused billions of euros in losses to farmers who usually depend on it to irrigate meadows and rice fields. The authorities have reduced the amount of water in order to protect the lake and to protect the tourism of financial importance associated with it.
The report pointed out that the water level in the lake yesterday reached 32 centimeters, close to the lowest level recorded in 2003 and 2007.
Many European countries, including Germany, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and Britain, are suffering this summer from a drought that has affected farmers and shipping companies and prompted authorities to restrict water use. The southwestern European countries are experiencing a severe heat wave.
