Oasis at school, enlarged square and permeable soils: how Montrouge wants to fight against heat islands

The city is increasing greening operations, in particular to fight against heat islands. Square Schuman, for example, will win

More green in Montrouge!

This Thursday afternoon, residents were able to discover the future of Schuman Square, this 3,400 m2 green space located opposite the town hall, just behind the Saint-Jacques church.

By 2025, this park will have gained 1,700 m2.

This operation is part of a broader process of revegetation of public space, an increasingly widespread approach that has become essential in the fight against heat islands.

It was Damien Oberlé, director of enhancement of public spaces and mobility, who presented the project to a dozen residents.

A similar operation was held in July.

It's not just a few more trees that will be planted in the square.

This development, the result of long consultation with the public, represents an investment of 12 million euros and will immobilize the site during the two years of work.

“Montrouge, today very mineral, is making its ecological transition, summarizes Damien Oberlé.

We are the 5th densest city in France.

Each square meter planted is a square meter gained!

Two plots had to be recovered for the project to succeed: a former paper mill whose 800 m2 site was pre-empted by the city and land on which a building was demolished.

Rather than rebuilding on it, the municipality preferred to keep it bare to make it a green space.

An oasis in a schoolyard

The entire square will be transformed with two paths to compensate for the 4 meter drop, a body of water, a playground, new plantations on all strata, from trees to herbaceous plants.

“The goal is to promote different habitats and develop biodiversity.

We have also worked on public lighting so that the color and intensity disturb the fauna as little as possible.

The lighting will also be switched off in the middle of the night”, continues Damien Oberlé.

And if Thursday, we were far from the crowd to discover the future of this square, the questions were extremely precise even pointed: from noise pollution to the accesses of the park through the state of the current trees, nothing was forgotten .

“We will do the earthworks very carefully so as not to damage the root system of large trees like that of the chestnut tree, reassures Damien Oberlé.

It is 50 cm deep.

We're not going to dig any deeper.

Doing earthworks here is very special, very fine work.

We are not cows!

“What convince Rémy, a new resident of 32 years, delighted to” see his city become more and more attractive “.

"We were able to seize this opportunity - rare in a dense city like Montrouge - to affirm our desire to green the city, to enrich biodiversity and to offer peaceful and shared public spaces", comments Étienne Lengereau, the mayor (UDI) of Montrouge.

Montrouge.

An "oasis" is being developed in the courtyard of the Berthelot kindergarten.

Other major projects are underway.

Within a few months, the Ginoud-Gautier district, one of the entrances to the city, will have changed its face with 200 trees planted and 15% of 16,000 m2 of the perimeter will have been “dewatered”.

Ditto, rue de la Vanne which will increase from 3 to 80 trees and will now have a partially permeable soil to absorb water.

Finally, work is in full swing inside the Berthelot kindergarten.

"We are transforming the 1,600 m2 courtyard into an oasis", says the town hall.

Replacement of the old asphalt with a beige (which therefore reflects heat) and draining material, green spaces increased by 41%, planting of plants at the foot of trees, development of a second vegetable garden with 9 bins, planting of trees , new playground in greener materials and installation of foggers… And, in order to respect seasonality, tree planting will only be done in the fall, probably during the All Saints holidays.
