The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that Tropical Storm Miari may reach Japan today in the central regions of Tokai and Kanto, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.
The Japanese broadcaster NHK quoted the agency as saying that the storm is likely to increase in strength as it approaches Japanese territory, and urged residents to be careful in anticipation of landslides, floods, high waves, and rising or flooding rivers.
Local Japanese authorities said heavy rains are expected to hit Shizuoka and other prefectures in the Tokai Prefecture, increasing disaster risks.
Some parts of Shizuoka Prefecture have already seen more than 200 millimeters of rain in the past 24 hours, and the Tokai, Kanto and Cochin regions are likely to see more than 80 millimeters of rain per hour.
On the other hand, officials of the All Japan Airlines (ANA) said that they canceled ten flights that were scheduled to leave and arrive in Shizuoka and Hachigo Island today, suggesting the possibility of canceling more flights to and from Haneda Airport in Tokyo.
