A man who survived after a tunnel collapsed has been charged with digging it as part of an extensive plot to rob a bank.
The police in Rome reported yesterday (Friday) that the man is suspected of being part of a four-member gang that planned to carry out the robbery this weekend, when the Italian capital celebrates a day off in honor of Emperor Augustus.
A spokesman for the Carbaneri, Italy's military police force, told CNN that officers arrived at the collapsed tunnel after receiving reports that a man was trapped in the rubble.
Upon arriving at the scene, they arrested two people on suspicion of trying to flee the scene in a car, after which a fourth person was arrested.

A rescue team managed to get the trapped thing out after eight hours, and it was sent to San Camillo Hospital in Rome for tests.
Attorney Carmine Pescarosa, who represents the two men arrested in the car, told CNN that the two are charged with resisting arrest and are not being investigated for other crimes at this time.
According to him, the two denied involvement and connection to the person who was shadowed from the tunnel ruins.
He added that according to them, they happened to be passing by the area when the man asked them for help, and led them to an empty store where the entrance to the tunnel was found.
When they realized what was happening, the two called for emergency services before leaving the scene, he said.
Pascarosa also confirmed that a fourth person had been questioned and charged, along with the captured man, with digging the tunnel.
