Paul Mappley and Yip Ward, two 48-year-old English landscapers, have just bought a hamlet in the small town of Saint-Cyr-du-Bailleul (

“We were living in a caravan in England and given the property prices there, becoming owners was absolutely inconceivable.

Until a friend told us that she had seen a “habitable” house for sale in the Channel for… 12,000 euros, says Paul Mappley alongside Yip Ward, both 48-year-old English landscapers.

But even that amount, we didn't have it, so we worked hard and sold everything we had.

That's how it all started”.

They therefore settle in this hamlet at the beginning of 2021.

“Bringing them back to life while respecting their original architecture”

It was then that they gradually noticed that the neighboring cottages were deteriorating without anyone maintaining them.

They then seek to understand the situation and discover with amazement that the whole hamlet is in fact for sale... for "only" 26,000 euros, with, in addition to the cottages, two barns, a stable, a workshop, a well, a wine press cider and a large bread oven.

All surrounded by 8000 m² of land.

In short, a real little hamlet of yesteryear, which the two men have just acquired entirely.

“These buildings are wonderful historical testimonies.

We will do everything to bring them back to life while respecting their original architecture.

And perhaps in the long term create here a place of vacation rental a little luxurious.

It's our way of thanking France which allowed us to become owners.

Which would never have been possible in England”, explains Yip Ward.

First of all, everything has to be repaired.

The two men are launching a fundraising campaign on social networks, called “Help!

We

need to restore this village”

, via the solidarity platform “gofundme”.

They hope to raise 20,000 pounds (23,500 euros).
