Ascension Day is imminent - and a large part of Bavaria is looking forward to a public holiday.
But not everyone can enjoy a long weekend.
Nuremberg – Assumption Day: A public holiday throughout Bavaria.
All of Bavaria?
No - only in 1704 municipalities of the Free State is August 15th, this year a Monday, a public holiday.
Instead, in 352 Bavarian communities it is a normal working day when the shops are open and people have to go to work.
Assumption Day: No public holiday in Nuremberg
Nuremberg, for example, is one of the municipalities that does not enjoy a public holiday on Monday, August 15th.
This is due to the basic regulation for this day: Because a holiday is only in those communities in which the population is predominantly Catholic.
While this is the case in the major cities of Munich, Würzburg, Augsburg and Regensburg, among others, Nuremberg, among others, gets nothing.
In 2021, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary fell on a Sunday, so there was not much excitement about the holiday.
However, since this year it falls on a working day again, the regional difference is becoming more noticeable again.
So while the shops in Munich are closed and most people are enjoying the hot weather, in 352 communities, especially in northern Bavaria, everything is going on as usual.

Holiday in most of Bavaria: confusion and train chaos
The fact that Monday is a public holiday in some municipalities and not in the neighboring municipality inevitably causes some confusion year after year.
For example, does the public holiday apply where you live or where you work?
The location is crucial, knows

.
The timetable of national travel offers often causes chaos.
While the public holiday timetable applies in one municipality, the regular weekday timetable is used in the neighboring municipality.
Which applies nationwide must be checked by passengers on a case-by-case basis.
