With simple capabilities and equipment, engineer Ali Youssef from the countryside of Jableh in Lattakia succeeded in designing a miniature model of an experimental dock with the aim of providing a modern educational tool that helps students of the Naval Engineering Department at the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Tishreen University to conduct some tests on miniature ship models in practice.

The “Tishreen” basin, as Youssef called it, is an academic research project that aims to create an added value for scientific research in the Department of Marine Engineering, due to the lack of a special laboratory in it and the fact that marine scientific research related to the field of ship design and testing is carried out within private basins.

In a statement to SANA Youth, the naval engineer Ali Youssef said that since 2019, he has started implementing a pilot model for the Tishreen Basin project in his home located in the village of Al-Burjan, using simple equipment and materials, due to his desire to link the theoretical and practical aspects of his work as a university teacher, explaining that the scarcity of this kind of Academic projects motivated him to do research and conduct a statistical study within the international organization specialized in ship model testing basins, where the study included 92 international basins of different sizes.

Regarding the construction specifications of the basin, Youssef stated that the basin structure was built of concrete material with dimensions of 400 cm length, 120 cm width and 40 cm height. The model is installed in it and the second one to generate waves of different frequencies and lengths.

All components of the aquarium are fully controlled, according to Youssef, through a computer program connected to monitoring cameras for the tests that take place within the basin, pointing out that the aquarium accommodates models of ships ranging from 30 cm to 150 cm depending on the type of experiment, in addition to containing a water circuit for submersion tests.

Youssef pointed out that the success of his project experience is due to the cooperation of his friends with him with their academic and academic experiences and the contribution of craft activities to the local community as well as to the project, in addition to the support of parents and professors specialized in the field of ship design and construction.

Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Tishreen University, Dr. Michael Berbhan, confirmed that Eng. Youssef was able, with modest capabilities, to construct a small basin to generate waves and conduct some tests for ship models, indicating that the basin is the nucleus of the idea of building a model of it at the university with dimensions that allow conducting many experiments and tests for educational, training and research purposes .

The student, Hassan Habaka, considered that the basin is one of the best methods used for evaluation and obtaining results before proceeding with the actual design of the ship, and that its presence within the reach of marine engineering students provides a complete vision for the studies that are being carried out.
